Mara looked at the file again. At the very bottom, under "Status," there was one final line she hadn’t noticed:

With shaking fingers, Mara opened her own Facebook account. She searched for "Jenny Reynolds." A profile popped up—a cheerful woman in her sixties, smiling in front of a rose garden. The cover photo was a quote about grandchildren. The account had 234 friends. It posted every Tuesday and Friday: recipes, weather complaints, nostalgic photos of 1980s high schools.
Mara dropped the laptop. The screen went dark for a moment before flickering back to life. Mara looked at the file again
She clicked on the file’s properties. Last modified: three days before Elaine’s heart attack.
Six people had liked the comment. One of them was Mara’s own Aunt Carol. She searched for "Jenny Reynolds
And then there was "David Chen." The suspended one. The "Extraction" account. Mara clicked on the notes attached to the file—a separate text document her mother had left open.
