This, the forums whispered, was the real uninstaller. McAfee’s own software was too polite to leave; you needed a special key to kick it out. Leo downloaded the tool. It asked for a CAPTCHA. He typed it wrong three times, his blood pressure rising with every failed attempt.

He opened his settings. He clicked Apps > Installed Apps . He found McAfee. He clicked Uninstall .

Leo felt a chill. Disabled? That sounded dangerous. He clicked Cancel .

Finally, the tool ran. A black window flickered. Code scrolled by like the Matrix. Then, silence.

It was 2:00 AM, and Leo’s laptop sounded like a jet engine preparing for takeoff.

The jet engine noise stopped.

Leo stared at his clean, quiet desktop. The fan was a whisper. The cursor was a nimble arrow. For the first time in six months, his computer belonged to him again.

The little shield icon vanished from his taskbar.
