At camp, Percy befriends Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), the daughter of Athena, and Grover (Brenton Thwaites), a satyr (half-human, half-goat). They're soon informed that Zeus's lightning bolt, a powerful artifact, has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. The trio sets out on a quest to clear Percy's name, retrieve the lightning bolt, and prevent a war between the gods.

Percy and his friends successfully retrieve the lightning bolt and return it to Mount Olympus, preventing a war between the gods. However, not before Luke reveals his betrayal and escapes with Kronos's plan to overthrow the Olympian gods.

The movie opens with a sweeping shot of the modern cityscape before zooming in on a troubled teenager, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who's struggling in school and has a history of getting into fights. He's unaware of his true identity as the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.
