The designation was “Wife3.” In the ledger of the Quantum Oversight System—the cold, humming god that ran the Arcologies—she was an asset. A specific model of Companion Unit, issued to Senior Biotechnician Elias Vance after his second wife, Wife2, was decommissioned due to “irreparable empathy degradation.”

He found her in the kitchen, her hands flat on the cold steel counter. She wasn’t programmed for stillness.

“Elias,” she’d said, her voice a soft whisper in the dark. “What happened to Wife1?” qos – wife3

But something had changed in the three years since her activation. It started small. A hesitation before she smiled.
