Morty tapped the screen. Nothing. He dragged the slider forward. The video skipped to a scene of Space Beth fighting a giant sperm, but the audio remained on Rick’s frozen face: “Portal gun, portal gun…”

The plot was barely coherent. Rick was trying to reset the “Portal Traveler’s License” at a cosmic DMV. The DMV was run by a giant, bureaucratic head with many eyes, voiced (badly) by a soundalike actor. The real Chris Parnell’s voice for Jerry would cut in every few seconds, then switch to a guy doing a bad impression from a public bathroom. Morty tapped the screen

“Morty,” the glitched Rick said, “we have to go to the Citadel of bzzzt Ricks who file their taxes on time.” Suddenly, the rip became transcendent.

“It’s not your dad, Morty, it’s what happens when you download ‘Rick and Morty’ from a site that also sells counterfeit Beats by Dre. You get a low-resolution simulacrum that feeds on buffering frustration.”
