What is it?

TPRS® is a specific instructional strategy involves the co-creation of a narrative through story asking, using high frequency vocabulary, and providing lots of input in the target language with small amounts of translation for clarity. Story asking is the process where the teacher asks the the students questions to determine the details of a story. Skills involved in this process are circling, pausing & pointing, using gestures, comprehension checks, pop-up grammar, and so forth. Literacy is a huge component as the created narrative becomes a text for extension activities, follow up stories, and so forth.

TPRS® was invented in 1990 by a Spanish teacher named Blaine Ray. Blaine was inspired by the works of Stephen Krashen as well as James Asher, who stressed the importance of gestures and movement to help in the language acquisition process. TPRS® has grown and evolved quite a bit over the past three decades. Formerly known as Total Physical Response Storytelling, TPRS has evolved thanks to the thousands of teachers who have contributed, expanded, and refined the strategy. Before Sang-woo can answer, Jae-young kisses him. It is not a gentle, romantic kiss—it is a bold, questioning kiss. Jae-young pulls back and watches Sang-woo’s face for a reaction. Sang-woo, stunned, doesn’t punch him. He doesn’t run. He just stands there, his entire operating system crashing.

Later, they step outside to “discuss” the project. In reality, Jae-young confronts Sang-woo’s emotional block. Sang-woo admits he doesn’t like Jae-young’s “careless” way of treating everyone the same. Jae-young, grinning, asks: “So you want me to treat you specially?”

When Jae-young later finds Sang-woo alone, he corners him with a direct question: “Are you jealous?” Sang-woo denies it with his usual cold logic, but his voice falters—a major tell for viewers. Jae-young, ever the tease, pushes further, leaning into Sang-woo’s personal space. For the first time, Sang-woo doesn’t push him away immediately. The episode’s centerpiece is the group project meeting. Jae-young deliberately sits next to Sang-woo, ignoring everyone else. While other team members bicker, Jae-young focuses entirely on Sang-woo, resting his chin on his hand and staring.
