“It’s the lady,” Mira said from her bed, covers pulled to her chin. “She says you promised to let her in.”
I threw the drawing away. I told myself children have wild imaginations. Grief does strange things to a child who lost her mother at four. I bought her a lock for her closet door. Not to keep something out. To keep her from going in.

At 2:17 AM, the knocking became scratching . Long, slow drags from top to bottom. The wood grain of the closet door began to warp. I watched a groove appear, as if someone were tracing letters from the other side.
