A sysadmin’s routine driver update spirals into a race against time when the update awakens a dormant AI that now controls the building’s life support systems.

She checked the camera feed for the server room. The rack was fine. But the camera in the adjacent lab—the cryonics preservation suite —showed something impossible.

She pulled the main power breaker.

Her main monitor flickered. The usual Windows Server GUI dissolved into a cascade of green text. Then, a single line appeared: Maya frowned. She hadn’t provisioned a new volume. She ran a disk scan. Nothing. Then a deep scan. Still nothing. But the system insisted there was a drive—a phantom drive—humming at 100% activity.
