Edna smiled. “Honey, you just proved my point.” Halfway down the river, the paddle wheeler’s engine coughed, belched black smoke, and died. The captain announced a “minor mechanical.” Panic rippled through the seniors. One man started singing “Nearer My God to Thee.”

“Close enough.” Edna grabbed a fire extinguisher. “Lead the way, Professor.” For the next twenty minutes, Sheldon lay on his back in a grease-stained engine room, Missy holding a flashlight, Edna barking instructions from the hatch. His hands trembled—not from fear, but from the overwhelming pressure of other people depending on him . His brain supplied equations easily. People did not compute.
