The Arch didn't scan him. It absorbed him.

"I need you to deliver something," Zalmos said.

The god smiled. It was the saddest thing Elias had ever seen.

"Yes," Zalmos agreed. He reached over and gently touched Elias's wrist. "But you won't need a body where you're going. You'll need something else."

"Myself. Thirty years ago." Zalmos finally looked up. His eyes were not an actuary's eyes. They were deep wells where logic went to drown. "Before I became... this."

"You're late," he said.
